The Fit has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Yaris doesn't offer a whiplash protection system.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests front crash prevention systems. With a score of 6 points, IIHS rates the Collision Mitigation Braking System optional in the Fit as “Superior.” The Yaris scores only 3 points and is rated only “Advanced.”

The Fit EX/EX-L's lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The Yaris doesn't offer a lane departure warning system.

The Fit's blind spot mirrors use wide-angle convex mirrors mounted in the corner of each side view mirror to reveal objects that may be in the driver's blind spots. The Yaris doesn't offer a system to reveal objects in the driver's blind spots.

Both the Fit and the Yaris have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front-wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The Fit Auto's standard 1.5 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 22 more horsepower (128 vs. 106) and 10 lbs.-ft. more torque (113 vs. 103) than the Yaris' 1.5 DOHC 4 cyl. The Fit's standard 1.5 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 24 more horsepower (130 vs. 106) and 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (114 vs. 103) than the Yaris' 1.5 DOHC 4 cyl.

On the EPA test cycle the Fit Auto LX CVT 1.5 4 cyl. (128 HP) gets better fuel mileage than the Yaris Auto (33 city/40 hwy vs. 32 city/40 hwy).

The Fit Auto has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Yaris doesn't offer a CVT.

The Fit stops much shorter than the Yaris:

The Fit LX's standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Yaris L Sedan's standard 65 series tires. The Fit Sport/EX/EX-L's tires have a lower 55 series profile than the Yaris LE/XLE's 60 series tires.

The Fit has vehicle speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Yaris doesn't offer variable-assist power steering.

The Fit EX handles at .82 G's, while the Yaris Sedan pulls only .80 G's of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Fit Sport is 9.4 inches shorter than the Yaris, making the Fit easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Fit has 9.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Yaris (95.7 vs. 85.9).

The Fit has 1.3 inches more front headroom, 2.9 inches more front hip room, 1.7 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, 4.9 inches more rear legroom and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Yaris.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Fit's rear seats recline. The Yaris' rear seats don't recline.

To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the Fit's hatch uses gas strut supported hinges that don't intrude into the cargo area. The Yaris' useful trunk space is reduced by its intrusive beam hinge.

The Fit Automatic offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The Yaris doesn't offer a remote starting system.

The Fit's driver power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Yaris' power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Fit has a standard rear wiper. The Yaris doesn't offer a rear wiper.

The Fit has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Yaris has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the XLE.

To shield the driver and front passenger's vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Fit EX/EX-L has standard extendable sun visors. The Yaris doesn't offer extendable visors.

The Fit EX-L has standard heated front seats, which keep the driver and front passenger extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated seats aren't available in the Yaris.

For greater rear passenger comfort, the Fit has standard rear heat vents to keep rear occupants more comfortable. The Yaris doesn't offer rear vents.

A built-in pollen filter removes pollen, exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the Fit's passenger compartment. This helps prevent lung and/or sinus irritation, which can trigger allergies or asthma. The Yaris doesn't offer a filtration system.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Fit EX/EX-L has a standard Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Yaris doesn't offer an adaptive cruise control.

To direct the driver from any location to a given street address with audible turn-by-turn directions, a GPS navigation system is available on the Fit EX-L. The Fit's navigation system also has a real-time traffic update feature that offers alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The Yaris doesn't offer a navigation system.

Insurance will cost less for the Fit owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Fit will cost $320 less than the Yaris over a five-year period.

The Fit will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Fit will retain 54.12% to 57.31% of its original price after five years, while the Yaris only retains 50.54% to 51.36%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Fit is less expensive to operate than the Yaris because it costs $59 less to do the manufacturer's suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost less on the Fit than the Yaris, including $16 less for a starter and $13 less for a power steering pump.

The Fit was chosen as one of Car and Driver's “Top Ten” for 7 of the last 13 years. The Yaris has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Fit was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine's “All Stars” for 2 of the last 11 years. The Yaris has never been an “All Star.”

The Honda Fit outsold the Toyota Yaris by 27% during the 2019 model year.
