The Mazda CX-9 has Daytime Running Lights to help keep it more visible under all conditions. Canadian government studies show that driving with lights during the day reduces accidents by 11% by making vehicles more conspicuous. The QX80 doesn't offer Daytime Running Lights.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the CX-9 uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The QX80 uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the CX-9 and the QX80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The Mazda CX-9 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1550 to 1600 pounds less than the INFINITI QX80.

The CX-9 is 9.5 inches shorter than the QX80, making the CX-9 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The CX-9 is 8.2 inches shorter in height than the QX80, making the CX-9 much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Unibody construction makes the CX-9's chassis much stiffer, which contributes to better handling, and enables softer springs to be used for a better ride. Unibody construction's stiffness also contributes to better durability and less body squeaks and rattles. The QX80 doesn't use unibody construction, but a body-on-frame design.

The CX-9 Grand Touring/Signature has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver's line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The QX80 doesn't offer a heads-up display.

Standard Mazda Connect for the CX-9 allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, following twitter accounts and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the CX-9 is less expensive to operate than the QX80 because it costs $306 less to do the manufacturer's suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the CX-9 than the QX80, including $101 less for a water pump, $70 less for an alternator, $825 less for a timing belt/chain and $769 less for a power steering pump.
