For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Ford Fusion have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Alfa Romeo Giulia doesn't offer pretensioners for the rear seat belts.

A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Alfa Romeo Giulia doesn't offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Fusion and the Giulia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available rear parking sensors.

Ford's powertrain warranty covers the Fusion 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Giulia. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Giulia ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Fusion's corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Giulia's (5 vs. 4 years).

There are over 19 times as many Ford dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Fusion's warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it's being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Fusion's reliability 28 points higher than the Giulia.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Fusion first among midsize cars in their 2019 Initial Quality Study. The Giulia isn't in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates' 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 35 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is ranked 29th, below the industry average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports' December 2019 Auto Issue reports that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ford 13 places higher in reliability than Alfa Romeo.

The Fusion FWD's standard fuel tank has 1.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Giulia (16.5 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Fusion AWD's standard fuel tank has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Giulia (18 vs. 15.3 gallons).

The Fusion has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it's removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Giulia doesn't offer a cap-less fueling system.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Ford Fusion higher (5 to 7 out of 10) than the Alfa Romeo Giulia (3). This means the Fusion produces up to 24.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Giulia every 15,000 miles.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Fusion's wheelbase is 1.2 inches longer than on the Giulia (112.2 inches vs. 111 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Fusion is 1.4 inches wider in the front than on the Giulia.

The front grille of the Fusion uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Giulia doesn't offer active grille shutters.

The Fusion has 7.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Giulia (102.8 vs. 95.4).

The Fusion has .6 inches more front headroom, 1.9 inches more front legroom, 1.7 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, 3.2 inches more rear legroom, .7 inches more rear hip room and 3.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Giulia.

The Fusion has a much larger trunk than the Giulia (16 vs. 12 cubic feet).

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Fusion easier. The Fusion's trunk lift-over height is 24.4 inches, while the Giulia's liftover is 25.8 inches.

The Fusion has a 1000 lbs. towing capacity. The Giulia has no towing capacity.

If the windows are left open on the Fusion the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Giulia can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don't have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Fusion SE/SEL/Titanium's exterior PIN entry system. The Giulia doesn't offer an exterior PIN entry system.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Fusion Titanium keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Giulia doesn't offer air-conditioned seats.

The Fusion (except S) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Giulia doesn't offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Insurance will cost less for the Fusion owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Fusion will cost $1960 less than the Giulia over a five-year period.

The Fusion will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Fusion will retain 39.28% to 42.37% of its original price after five years, while the Giulia only retains 34.65% to 38.01%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Ford Fusion will be $16075 to $17281 less than for the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Ford Fusion, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Alfa Romeo Giulia isn't recommended.
